Ask three people in Edison where they live and you may get three answers, none of them the word Edison. The township is a patchwork of around thirty named sections and villages, among them Menlo Park, Oak Tree, Stelton, Clara Barton, Lindenau, Bonhamtown and Piscatawaytown, and residents use those names the way people in other places use a town name.
The scale explains it. Edison counted 107,588 residents in the 2020 census across about 31 square miles, and it borders ten municipalities: East Brunswick, Highland Park, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Sayreville, South Plainfield and Woodbridge in Middlesex County, plus Clark, Plainfield and Scotch Plains in Union County. Metuchen, a separate borough, is largely enclosed by it. U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 287 cross the township, and Route 27 runs along Oak Tree Road, the South Asian shopping strip many people call Little India.
The map is uneven in other ways too. Raritan Center, a 2,300-acre business park, holds the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, while Roosevelt Park, 196 acres and the oldest county park in Middlesex County, sits on the residential side. Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park lab site and the Menlo Park Mall, which opened on Route 1 in 1959, are two more reference points a customer might use to describe where a job is. Camp Kilmer and Raritan Arsenal are older names that still turn up in directions, Edison State Park, Oak Tree Pond and the Dismal Swamp add more green space, and Middlesex County College and Edison Academy Magnet School bring students and families through the township every day.
As of October 2026 the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs lists about 195 active home improvement and electrical contractor licenses with an Edison mailing address, so a homeowner comparing contractors has plenty of names to scroll through. A mailing address is not the same as a municipality, and many of those businesses also work in the towns next door. What separates one site from another is rarely the work itself. It is whether the page says which sections and neighboring towns the business actually covers. That can be one strong Edison page or a set of pages for the sections where most of the work is, but either way it should read as written by someone who knows the township.
