Ask where someone in Franklin Township lives and the answer is often not Franklin. Most of the township uses a Somerset mailing address, in ZIP codes 08873 and 08875, while other parts use Kingston (08528), Franklin Park (08823), East Millstone or Zarephath (08890). A customer typing a search is as likely to type “Somerset NJ” as the township’s own name.
That is one of the first things a Franklin business has to plan for, because the township is large: 46.88 square miles and 68,364 residents in the 2020 census, the biggest population in Somerset County. It borders New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway and South Brunswick in Middlesex County, and Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Manville, Millstone, Montgomery, Rocky Hill and South Bound Brook in Somerset, plus Princeton in Mercer County. Interstate 287 crosses the north, Route 27 runs along the New Brunswick side, and County Routes 514, 518 and 527 cross it.
The named places read like a list of small towns. Beside Somerset and Kingston the township includes Franklin Park, East Millstone, Middlebush, Pleasant Plains, Blackwells Mills, Griggstown and Zarephath, among others. Green space is just as spread out: the Delaware and Raritan Canal runs about 22 miles along the northern and western edges, with Colonial Park (685 acres), the 500-acre Hutcheson Memorial Forest and the Six Mile Run Reservoir Site. Rutgers Preparatory School, founded in 1766, is also here, along with Franklin High School. A crew based near Kingston and a crew based near Franklin Park may spend most of their week in different parts of the same township, and the customers in each part describe the place differently.
We do not quote a state licensing count for Franklin, because the state files most of the township under a Somerset mailing address and a Franklin-only figure would mislead. The honest picture is that the competition here is spread across several mailing names and several neighboring towns, which also means a Franklin business is rarely competing only with other Franklin businesses. It is worth deciding early which mailing names and which neighbors belong on your pages, and which do not.
KMC Spark builds the site, the local pages and the request form for service businesses covering Franklin and the towns around it, and it starts with a free consultation. Bring the sections and mailing names your customers use, and we will say plainly where to start.
