Your Traffic Went Up and the Phone Did Not Ring

A monthly report full of green arrows, and a business that feels exactly the same as it did in March. It is one of the most common complaints we hear about SEO, and there are really only three explanations.

1. The traffic was never going to exist

A ranking is not a visit any more. Semrush’s own measurement puts zero-click traffic at roughly 27.2% of US search traffic, up from 24.4% in March 2024. People get their answer on the results page and never leave it.

That is not a failure on your part, but it changes what a rankings report is worth. Climbing for a question Google answers on the page itself buys less than it did three years ago. Being the business that gets named buys more, which we wrote about in what AI recommendations mean for you.

2. The wrong people are arriving

The signs: plenty of impressions and a poor click rate, visitors from well outside where you actually work, or search terms that are research rather than hiring. Somebody reading “how much does a kitchen remodel cost” might be nine months away, or might be pricing a job they intend to do themselves.

That traffic is not worthless. It should just be measured against a different expectation, and it should not be the traffic your main pages are tuned for.

3. The right people arrive and the page does not do its job

The signs: they land, they do not scroll, they never reach a contact page. Or they reach it and do not finish the form.

This is the most common of the three and much the most fixable. Answer the question the search actually asked, in the first screen. Give one obvious next step and repeat it. Ask for less on the form. The usual culprits are in why a good-looking site still does not get calls.

Measure the thing you want

Sessions are not the goal. Calls, forms and booked appointments are. If those are not tracked, every conversation about traffic is guesswork, and the graph will keep climbing whether or not anything is working.

What working actually looks like

Branded searches rising, meaning people looking for you by name rather than for a service. Returning visitors. And the quiet signal that matters most, which is whoever answers the phone noticing that callers already know what you do before they ring.
