How to Choose a Web Designer in NJ: Questions to Ask and Red Flags

Choose a NJ web designer by asking four things: who will actually do the work, who owns the finished site, what happens after launch, and how you leave if it is not working. A clear, written answer to each is a good sign, and a vague answer to any of them is a red flag.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who will work on my project? Some agencies sell you with senior people and hand the work to juniors or outside contractors. Ask for the names of the people who will build it.
  2. Who owns the design, content, code and domain? You should. Ask for it in writing, and ask what happens if you leave.
  3. What happens after launch? A site needs updates, security fixes, backups and monitoring. Ask what is included, what it costs per month and who answers the phone.
  4. Is it built from a template? A themed site lightly customized can look like your competitor’s. Ask to see how the design starts.
  5. How do I cancel, and is there a contract? Look for the notice period and any early-exit fees.
  6. Will the site be found? Ask how the pages are structured for Google, Maps and AI assistants, and what reporting you will get.

Red flags

  • The domain or hosting account is in the designer’s name, not yours.
  • You cannot get a plain-language answer about price before the sales call.
  • An account manager sits between you and the people doing the work.
  • The contract auto-renews for a long term with no clear way out.
  • Promises of a guaranteed Google ranking or a guaranteed number of leads.

How we answer them

KMC Spark LLC is a family-owned studio in Piscataway, NJ. You work with the same team from the first call through launch and after, with no account managers and no hand-offs. You own the design, content and code, with the domain in your name, and if you leave we hand the whole thing over. Our plans are month to month and our prices are published on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a web designer cost in NJ?

It depends on the scope. We publish our monthly plans for upkeep and growth from $199 a month and price a website build on a free 30-minute phone call, with the number in writing, so you can compare like for like.

Should I hire a local designer?

Local helps when you want to talk to the people doing the work and when they know your towns and market. We are based in Piscataway and also work with clients outside NJ.

What should a contract include?

Who owns the work, what is included after launch, the monthly cost, and how and when you can cancel.

What does a free audit tell me?

It checks your current site for speed and mobile use, search basics, how well it turns visits into calls, local search, and whether AI assistants can find and understand the business.
